American Heart Month 2022

February is American Hearth Month, first established in 1964 under President Lyndon B. Johnson. The goal of the month is to bring attention to the problem of heart and blood-vessel issues affecting Americans by sharing best practices on how to avoid disease and take the best care of your heart, according to the American College of Cardiology .

Facts about Heart Disease

The CDC asserts that heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women, and those of most ethnic and racial groups. Heart disease accounts for 1 in every 4 deaths in the United States, and 1 person dies every 36 seconds from cardiovascular disease. Coronary Artery disease is the most common type of heart disease people face. Heart.org reports the staggering fact that almost 50% of all U.S. adults have some type of cardiovascular disease. Many Americans are impacted daily by heart related issues and it is important to note the many actions that can be taken to ensure a healthy heart.

Keys to a Healthy Heart

Heart.org reveals that 80% of cardiovascular disease cases are preventable and the American Medical Association shares numerous heart-healthy practices. Make note of your blood pressure numbers and be on the lookout for any changes. Being physically active, reducing your intake of processed foods, avoiding smoking, moderating alcohol consumption, and maintaining a healthy weight are not only important for a healthy lifestyle, but can also improve and stabilize heart health. Spend the month of February, and every other month, taking care of yourself. Your heart will thank you!
